Working with horses

Horses and passion are inseparable ; for many it is a dream to work with these animals night and day. Eurohorsegrooms is here to help you realize your dreams.

Before you decide to pursue a career in the equestrian world, it is important to know what this lifestyle demands. This to prevent any disappointment, as perception often differs from reality. A full-time job in the equine-sector is very different to working and keeping your own horse, or occasionally helping out at your local yard.

Your working hours and schedules will be very different to those of a regular job. During the weekends you will often accompany the horses to shows, and daily work continues. Depending on the yard, you may travel to national and international shows. This means you may be away from home for several days. It is important you understand that working with horses is not bound by regular nine-to-five hours. Realize that you are working with animals who are not subject to time off, and need constant attention. Public holidays such as Christmas, New Years Eve, Carnaval, and Birthdays are no acception.

Daily work can be physically demanding. Stables need to be cleaned out every day, and depending on the yard, you may have to muck out as many as 20 boxes. Horses are regularly groomed and tacked up to be ridden by riders or yourself. As a groom you are an essential aid to the rider. During horse-shows you must be aware of your duties; shows can often be quite stressful! Not only are the horses expected to be groomed and well looked after, the yard itself should always be tidy. It is important to show initiative and demonstrate that you can tackle various situations. Motivation and dedication are key words in this sector.

There is a positive side to this story! Think about the satisfaction you gain after a full day with the horses. You are out in the fresh air most of the day, and each day at work is different from the last. You will be given the opportunity to work with renowned horses and people, who you may only have admired from a distance. What could be better than turning your hobby into your full-time job?!

It is often said that the horse-world is a tough one, but if you have the right attitude and you give it 100%, you will have the time of your life!
